Math For All Seasons

Each problem has a little twist,
Each verse a clue you might have missed.

So try a riddle on for size,
Your brain will like the exercise.

And when you're done it will be clear,
That math's a blast throughout the year!

"The inspiration for this book came in a round-about way from my experiences as a student teacher several years ago. I was teaching algebra to ninth graders in New York City when I was struck by the fact that many kids could set up equations correctly but had difficulty solving them. It was their basic arithmetic skills that were lacking, not their ability to think abstractly or algebraically.

"That's when I realized how important it is to reach kids as early as possible. With this in mind, my goal in writing has been to teach younger and younger kids intuitive ways of thinking about numbers and problems. I'm constantly amazed at how much they can pick up, sometimes faster than us adults!

"Math For All Seasons is the second in a series of books that teaches problem-solving to children. I wrote it for a younger audience (ages 5-8) than The Grapes of Math, but it shares the same goal of encouraging kids to think through problems rather than rely on memorization. In terms of computational skills, I hope this book will help kids make a smoother transition from counting to arithmetic by introducing intuitive ways to group and add numbers. It also teaches kids to be open-minded and practical, and encourages strategic thinking that is rooted in common sense."

"In writing Math For All Seasons, I hope to spark children's interest in math by showing them firsthand how fun problem solving can be. I hope to inspire them to have confidence in themselves and their ability to think creatively, and by posing problems in terms of poems and pictures, I hope to present math in a broader, more interesting way."
